The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, marking a significant moment for education in Ghana and the West African region.
This year’s examination saw a total of 37,825 candidates, comprising 17,389 males and 20,725 females, with the inclusion of 16 visually impaired participants. Despite the broad participation, 1,231 registered candidates were notably absent from the examination.
The integrity of the examination process was upheld through stringent measures against malpractice, resulting in the withholding of results for 289 candidates pending further investigation. Allegations of malpractice ranged from impersonation and collusion to the unauthorized use of mobile phones and external assistance within examination venues.
The examination’s core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies, showcased varying levels of achievement among the candidates. Performance statistics revealed a notable achievement in English Language and Integrated Science, with a significant majority of candidates securing grades between A1 and C6. However, Mathematics and Social Studies presented challenges, with a lower percentage of candidates achieving similar success.
WAEC has issued a stern warning against fraudulent activities, particularly the scamming of candidates with false promises of result upgrades in exchange for monetary compensation. The council emphasized the security and authenticity of the results database, urging institutions and organizations to verify results directly through WAEC’s official channels.
In conclusion, the release of the WASSCE results not only signifies the culmination of the candidates’ hard work and perseverance but also highlights the ongoing challenges and opportunities within the West African educational landscape. The WAEC extends its gratitude to all educational stakeholders for their support in conducting the examination and assures the public of its commitment to upholding the highest standards of educational assessment.
