University of Ghana College of Health Sciences, Courses, Requirements and How to Apply

The college of Health Sciences was the first college established by the University of Ghana in 1999. The college is aimed at training health professional in various field. The college of Health Science houses five schools and one research Centre.

This article is aimed at providing relevant information that will enable you to make the right choice in choosing your desired course.

University of Ghana Medical School, UGMS (School of Medicine and Dentistry)

This school is a merger between the Medical Department of the University and the Dentistry department of the University of Ghana.

What are the programmes UGMS run?

Undergraduate Programme

  • Bachelor of Medicine (Med. Sci)
  • Bachelor of Surgery (Mb, CHB), degree programmes.
  • Bachelor of Dental surgery.

What are the requirements for Legon Medical School first degree?

  • Individuals must have a maximum aggregate of seven (7). In the following relevant subject; Physics, chemistry and biology/ mathematics.
  • Individuals with “O” and “A” level of the G.C.E must satisfy general requirements for admission.
  • Individuals with a minimum of CGPA of 50% from the faculty of science from the University of Ghana who has completed level 100 in Biological science or Bio Mathematical Science (Chemistry option).

Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP)

This is a programme with a duration of four years.

Individuals are required to;

  • Hold a first degree with a pass of at least Second class lower or better in the following courses Basic medical, Bio-Mathematics, Physics Sciences etc. and other relevant science-related courses.
  • Have completed National service.
  • Pass a 3 hour written entrance examination on MCQs on the sciences (chemistry, Physics, Biology) = 50% and a short essay on General knowledge, Reasoning Ability and English = 50%.
  • Pass an interview session.

The programmes are divided into two phases.

Phase 1 is a one and half years’ programme that comprises 3 semesters and Phase 2 is a two and half years’ programme that comprises Junior and Senior clinical clerkships.

The following courses are offered for electives for 4-8 weeks

  1. Internal medicine
  2. Obstetrics/ Gynecology
  3. Anesthesia
  4. Hematology
  5. Pediatrics
  6. Surgery
  7. Radiology
  8. Psychiatry
  9. Community health
  10. Family medicine and Dentistry.

Applicants from visiting schools should have complete at least a year of clinical study in their own medical school and must have a command of the English language.

It is organized by the student executive body under IFMSA.

How many Departments does UGMS have?

There are fourteen departments in UGMS and one research Centre. Both the Medicine and Dentistry departments have seven (7) departments each;

School of Nursing and Midwifery

The school is aimed at developing good nurses who will provide quality health services to the nation.

How many departments does the School of Nursing and Midwifery in Legon have?

There are five departments in the school of nursing and midwifery. They are namely;

  • Department of Community health
  • Department of maternal and child health
  • Department of mental health.
  • Department of Research, Education and administration.
  • Department of Adult Health.

What are the Programmes and requirement available in the school of nursing and midwifery?

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSC) with options in;
  • General Nursing
  • Community Health nursing
  • Paediatric nursing
  • Mental health Nursing
  • Bachelor of Science in Midwifery

This is a four-year undergraduate programme.

Requirements;

Individuals who are WASSCE applicants are to have a minimum of C6 in all Core subjects and the following electives,

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology/Elective mathematics
  • General Agriculture, Physics Chemistry
  • Three General Arts electives
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Economics
  • Management in Living
  • General knowledge in Art and French

Can a diploma holder apply to the school of Nursing and Midwifery?

YES, a Diploma holder from a reorganized institution with a Diploma in nursing education, administration and nursing with a minimum GPA of 3.25 or a minimum of B+ average or second class upper can apply.

Does the school of nursing and midwifery of the University of Ghana offer Graduate Programme?

YES, the school offers 2 graduate programmes, that is;

  • Master of Science (MSc)/ Master of Philosophy (M.phl) in nursing.
  • The school’s master of science programme is a year-long programme whiles the Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) last for 2 years.

Admission Requirement.

  • Individual must be a registered nurse practised for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Individual must hold a degree of (BA/BSc) in nursing with at least second class lower.
  • Should pass an Interview session.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in paediatric in Nursing programme.

It is a year programme aimed at making sure theory with practice is integrated into the teaching and learning process.

Note: The school of nursing and Midwifery of the University of Ghana also runs a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in nursing. An individual who plans to attend must;

  • Have a first degree in nursing or midwifery
  • Have a research masters (Mphil, MSc, Mn) in nursing or midwifery or any. research masters in any related discipline with a minimum 2.5-grade point.
  • Be proficient in the English language.
  • Write a selection exam
  • Attend interview
  • Submit and defend a proposal during the interview.

School of Pharmacy

The school of pharmacy established in 2007 is one of the finest schools when it comes to the Pharmacy industry.

  • Department of Pharmaceutics and Microbiology.

The school is located on the Legon main campus premises of formal occupant Biochemistry Department.

Programme and Requirements

  • The school of pharmacy of the university of Ghana runs a four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. pharm) degree programme.

Requirement

Ghanaian candidate must have at least C6 in these subjects English, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics/Elective Mathematics and a pass in core social studies.

Can a foreign candidate apply?

  • Foreign candidate with the following requirement can apply
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE)
  • The American grades I2 and 13 Examinations.
  • The school also runs a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programme
  • It is a 24months pharmacy programme which gains the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree.

Requirements Needed

  • A Bachelor of Pharmacy as any related pharmacy degree from any recognized institution.
  • A minimum of three years of working experience.
  • A registered Pharmacist in Ghana.
  • The quality of your transcript.

School of public health University of Ghana

The school of Public Health UG is aimed at promoting the knowledge required to change public health in Ghana.

What are the departments in the School of Public Health University of Ghana?

The school has six departments in namely;

  • Biostatistics
  • Epidemiology and Disease Control
  • Health Policy, Planning and Management.
  • Population, Family and Reproductive Health.
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Programmes available at the school

  • Undergraduate programmes

Bachelor of Public health (BPH) programme.

  • It is currently the only undergraduate programme in the school.
  • It is a three year full-time starting from level 200.

Requirements

  • Individuals must hold a diploma from the University of Ghana or any other recognized university.
  • Must have an FGPA of 3.2 or better.
  • There would be a selection interview for applications.

Graduate Programmes.

  • Master of Public health
  • It’s a full 12months course, individuals must have a good first degree in a relevant discipline and a good working experience of 3 years would be an added advantage.

NB: The school also provides Weekend/Sandwich Programmes for the following course.

Master of Health Informatics

  • Individuals must have a good first degree in any of the following;
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Information Technology
  • Health
  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Must be strong in both quantitative and computing.

Master of Science in Applied Health Social Science

Individuals with Social Science degrees, managers or health science providers and a minimum of 3 years of working experience can apply.

  • Master of Science in Clinical Trials
  • Individuals must have a good first degree in a Science discipline with a minimum of 3 years of relevant working experience.
  • Master of Science in Occupational Hygiene
  • Individuals must have a relevant science degree and a minimum of 3 years of working experience.
  • Master of Science in Occupational Medicine.
  • Individuals must have an MB.CHB or any relevant course from any recognized institution.
  • Master of Science Public Health Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Individuals must have the following requirements;
  • A minimum of second class lower in a first degree of
  • Social Science
  • Environment Health
  • Biomedical Science
  • Medicine
  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Pharmacy
  • Public Health
  • At least 3 years writing relevant working experience in the public sector, international agencies as an NGO.

Note: Individuals must understand that the courses the masters are a full-time 1-year course with a minimum of three years relevant working experience.

Mphil in applied Epidemiology and Disease Control.

It is a 24 months course duration, Individuals must have;

  • A background or interest in Public Health
  • A good first degree with a minimum of Second Class Upper.
  • At least 3 years of working experience.

Also individuals with MPH, MSc and MBCHB can apply.

Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health

  • Individuals with a master degree and research work can apply for this.

The School of Public Health provides short causes every year in the following areas,

  • Malaria Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • HIV/AIDS Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • Improving Public Health intervention in Management
  • Epidemiology and Health Systems Management for District Health mangers (For Sierra Leoneans)

NB; Applicant might be called for an interview if necessary.
