Gaining admission this year to a reputable university in Ghana with a D7 in any of the required subjects is almost impossible. State-owned institutions like the University of Ghana, KNUST, UCC and many others frown on D7 and will automatically reject you.

How can I get admission to the university with D7?

You can get admission to a university in Ghana with D7 if you agree to re-write the paper through NOVDEC.

Some institutions also provide pre-programs for candidates to study and write NOVDEC before gaining admission or mature entrance exams. GIMPA offers such programs for students who are interested in pursuing tertiary education. They deliver this in two folds, one is for younger candidates who can go through their pre-program to gain qualifications to enter the full degree program. The second offering is for mature students who are older than 25 years and interested in pursuing a degree program.

What if I write NOVDEC and fail again?

If you write NOVDEC and fail again, the university will require you to apply and re-write the paper till you pass. Some Institutions will allow you to pursue your degree as you work on the paper, and some will also demand you pass before gaining admission.

There are some instances where students fail to produce a passing grade to replace their failed WASSCE course(s), in those instances, the school may allow you to graduate and withhold your certificate till you produce the required grade.

What should I do if I get a D7 in a required course but I can’t write NOVDEC?

If you still consider pursuing a degree program, you can look at other institutions that offer diploma courses and after you gain that certification, you can top up from a university for a degree. This might take you 5-6 years instead of the normal 4-year degree program. You can also look at NIIT’s programs which offer a 3-year degree from the University of Greenwich, UK.

Summary

To attain a recognised degree in Ghana from one of the top educational institutions, you will be required to get good grades, some institutions even have cut-off points for specific programs. Do well to study hard as you are in senior high to get the best grades to get you to your preferred university. However, when you fail to meet the standards, don’t lose hope, register for NOVDEC and rewrite or simply do it the hard way by going through a diploma program to a top-up degree. Doing a diploma before a top-up degree gives you two certifications that might look stronger in the face of employers.
