How Should I Study and Prepare for WASSCE?

Preparing for WASSCE may be tedious but by adopting the habit of completing a couple of simple things ahead of time, you can boost your confidence level and be ready for any test that comes your way.

How to Prepare for WASSCE

Below are various ways to prepare for WASSCE

1. Organise Your Study Space

Before you start your study and preparation, it is important to always get your study space ready at home or during preps. A study Space should have serene learning and distraction-free environment. Your surrounding should be what makes you comfortable. When at preps, avoid friends and colleagues who might distract you. When studying at home avoid the use of a phone (unless for research purposes) and other distractive objects.

2. Begin Your Study Early and Plan Your Timetable

Starting your study as early as possible ahead of time gives you a great advantage. To begin, provide yourself with an ample amount of time to revise what has been taught. You can schedule your time, break down the topics to meet the schedule, and get the goals that you want to achieve after each schedule and before the WASSCE exams. You can draw a study timetable a suitable timetable containing the topics you wish to cover each day (depending on your schedule). You should achieve your target at the end of the day. For example, if you plan to study Photosynthesis in Science, your study timetable should contain the daily breakdown of the main topic (Photosynthesis) whereby you study the definition and its importance in one day while you study its application and uses another day.

Plan your timetable in such a way that it would not be stressful or mount pressure on you, or eat into your bedtime. It should be flexible to suit you and make learning easier.

If you find a certain topic/ subject difficult, it should be your priority when planning your timetable.

TIP: I recommend you take a brief break to recall when studying to refresh the brain and reduce pressure.

3. Reading and Revising Your Notes and Textbooks

Frequent revision of your textbooks and notes based on lesson taught for the day refreshes your memory of the materials, understand the topic, tracks and keep you updated on what you learned, and assist you to recall what you learned thereby improving your memory.

Tip: I recommend you take note of crucial points while reading.

Additionally, it makes you aware of the information in your textbook and notes so you can identify where to spot them and what might be missing. Questions related to the notes we write usually pop up in WASSCE exams which gives you an advantage provided you read your notes.

4. Go Through your Syllabus

The Syllabus is an outlined summary of what you should learn throughout your study. This is what WAEC uses as a reference when setting most of the WASSCE questions.

It is a good place to get to know the topics and major ideas that you should be learning. Go through it and identify the topics and sub-topics. You’ll need to review these aspects to make sure you fully understand the big ideas behind the topic.

Compare your notes and what you have learned to the syllabus to see if you are up to date and also identify those you have not learned and work towards it.

Also, it is vital to review the study guides and sections which is found in most textbooks to get the gist of the concept.

5. Read and Solve Past Questions

Most of the time, WAEC repeats some past questions when setting the WASSCE questions. They either repeat them vividly or slightly twist them to test the knowledge of candidates. It is very important to have a copy of past questions on all your study subjects.

Objective questions from the books should be answered and then you should assess yourself by marking to see where you did well and where you failed. You should take note of where you failed and learn that aspect. With this, you will be familiar with such questions when you come across them. Theory and practical aspects should also be worked on and assess yourself to identify your flaw. You can also set yourself a timer which you’ll use to complete each past question to familiarize yourself with the WASSCE exams system.

Moreover, the past questions can help you identify the pattern in which the exams are set each year, thereby somehow predicting what might be set.

You should plan your schedule to finish solving the past questions before the WASSCE exams.

6. Form a Group to Study

It helps a lot when you study with your friends or form a group study. Studying in groups create a platform for each group member to share views, bring out ideas, submit a problem and solve it together, help each other, explain answers, and many more.

You can also solve past questions together to assess yourselves.

With these, you enrich your knowledge and help prepare each other for the exams.

7. Conduct Research

WASSCE isn’t only about what you’re being taught, it extends more than that. To enrich your knowledge, you should go beyond what you were taught by conducting research on the internet, reading more books, and many more. You are not only learning to write WASSCE. This knowledge will also be used in the outside world. You should take note of this.

8. Involve in Practical Work

It is recommended you involve yourself in practical work or experiments which will make you understand better. You are likely to remember a practical or an experimental answer during the WASSCE exams once you involved yourself earlier on.

Do not underrate or skip these aspects. They might end up haunting you in the exams.

9. Consistency

Since consistency is the ladder to success, you should make sure you are consistent with all these steps.
