Studying Fashion Design in a Vocational School
Vocational schools in Ghana are ideally the right institution to study fashion design, however, most vocational schools equip students to become tailors and seamstresses and do not focus heavily on the academia and deeper learning of the industry one may need.
If you are just interested in acquiring the necessary skills to design and create fashion products including clothes and accessories, applying to a vocational school is perfect for you.
Pros and Cons of Studying Fashion Design in a Vocational School
Pros
Vocational schools are mostly hands-on and the duration is mostly shorter than a standard diploma or degree programme offered in universities.
Cons
Vocational schools in Ghana mostly offer a 6-months long certificate programme, NVTI or a 1-year diploma. You won’t be able to get a degree from a vocational school.
Studying Fashion Design through Apprenticeship
Apprenticeship is the most common method of learning fashion design in Ghana, most people will normally find a well-advanced seamstress to under-learn them for years to build their skills, learn the business and later go on to open their own establishments.
Pros and Cons of Studying Fashion Design through Apprenticeship
Pros
This method of learning fashion design is cost-effective and direct on the job so you have real-life experience of how things work in the cloth-making business.
Cons
Although this process is cost-effective, it is rather too long to complete and because it is not academia supported, seeking to get a degree and further postgraduate programmes will not be possible.
Summary
Becoming a fashion designer is a great career choice and definitely high paying in Ghana and around the world. With the wake of the internet and love for made in Africa fashion products, you can easily work with companies and people all around the world and get recognised for your work. If you have the means and time, I would suggest you apply for a degree or at least a diploma programme in fashion design. However, if you do not have the means or resources to reach this, you can apply to a vocational institute or find an apprenticeship programme, later on, you can do other programmes to still reach the ultimate goal.
