What is a cut off point?

A cut off point is the limit to which anything beyond is not applicable.

What is a grade cut off point for school admission?

A grade cutoff point for school admission is a set of grade requirements stated by the school to which any other grade beyond will not be accepted.

Can I get admission if I do not meet the cut-off point?

There is a possibility to get admission if you do not meet the cut-off point but this is only in very rare cases when most applicants do not meet the said cut off point or the number of applicants is less. Even so, you will be required to meet the general entry requirements.

Calculating your WASSCE grades

The WASSCE grades are determined with points, for example, A1 is 1, B2 is 2 and C6 is 6. So if you got an A1 in 3 core subjects and 3 electives, you will multiply 1 by 6 and your total aggregate score will be 6. If the cut off point for a programme you want to pursue is 9, then you qualify to apply.

Steps to calculate your WASSCE grades to check cut off points

Below is a step by step guide to calculating your WASSCE grades to check if you are within the cut off point

  1. Write down the grades of your best 3 core subjects and your best 3 elective subjects (A1 – C6)
  2. Add all the numbers (points) from your grade (1-6) in your best 3 core subjects and 3 electives
  3. The total is your total aggregate score
  4. Check your total aggregate score if it meets the cut-off point of the programme you are applying for

Why do universities set cutoff points?

Universities set cutoff points to allow them to sort for the best applicants for a programme, this also is a way to limit the number of students they take for a particular programme at a time.

What is the difference between general entry requirements and cutoff points?

General entry requirements are the standard grade requirements to apply to study in the school, a cutoff point on the other hand is a set grade to which any other grades beyond will not be accepted.

Conclusion

In finding the right programme at the university, you will have to check your grades and confirm if you meet the cutoff point for the programme or not. Do not apply for a programme without doing your due diligence.
